AMRITSAR: Amritsar (rural) police arrested six members of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria group and recovered 5 different weapons, 1.5 kg of heroin, and around Rs 9 lakh drug money from their possession on Monday.
While talking to media persons in Amritsar on Monday, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Amritsar (rural) Swapan Sharma informed that police had been successful in breaking an arms and drugs smuggling racket following the arrest of six persons of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria group.
Those arrested were Harwinder @ Kalu, Akash, Sandeep@Seepa, Raja, Balraj and Divender@ Rana, all residents of Amritsar, he said.
Claiming that it was a ten day long operation that involved several specialized units and police stations of the district, he said that the operation was the follow up to the late night shooting which occurred on August 19, in Jandiala, where two persons were arrested with 2 kg of heroin and a pistol.
Swapan further stated that all of them had 18 criminal cases registered against them and were actively involved in alleged extortion and arms-contraband smuggling.
He said Harwinder, Akash and Sandeep , all in their twenties, had been running a well-organised extortion racket in Amritsar and nearby districts. They had been smuggling small arms of various calibre into the state from Madya Pardesh .
Stating that Harwinder had been managing his own sub-group in Mattewal area, Swapan said that the members of this group had been identified and soon would be arrested.
On the other hand, he informed media persons that Raja, Balraj and Divender had been smuggling contrabands up till Delhi.
“Their contacts in other states have been traced down and teams have been formed to nab them as per the police officials” said the SSP .
