Six Liverpool players to miss Manchester United fixture through injury

Jurgen Klopp will once again have to select a makeshift back four as Liverpool prepare to visit Old Trafford.

Manchester United warmed-up for Sunday afternoon's meeting against their old rivals with a memorable 6-2 win over Roma in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Doubles from Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani put United on the verge of a place in the Gdansk showpiece.

Those strikes came after Lorenzo Pellegrini (pen) and former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko had Italian visitors Roma 2-1 to the good at half-time of the first leg.

However, the hosts responded through Fernandes and Cavani, while Paul Pogba and substitute Mason Greenwood later got themselves in on the act.

Liverpool were without a midweek fixture ahead of their trip to the same venue on Sunday afternoon (4.30pm kick-off).

Despite that extra rest time, though, they have been dealt another injury blow in the build-up.

Indeed, having been without four key players for large parts of their failed first Premier League title defence, Liverpool won't be able to call upon Nat Phillips (hamstring) against United.

He joins long-term absentees Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez (both knee) on the sidelines, while fellow defender Joel Matip (ankle) and captain Jordan Henderson (groin) are not yet fit enough to return, either.

Asked if there was any change to his injury list, manager Klopp said: "No, no. All the same in this moment."

He added: "I don't have enough English words to describe the same thing more often. Yes, he [van Dijk] is running - Hendo [Jordan Henderson] is running, Joe [Gomez] is running, Joel [Matip] is running.

"That's all good. Imagine they wouldn't be able to run in this moment, that would be really bad. They are running and, in rehab, it always starts with straight-line running.

"You go through a lot of steps until you are ready to join team training, especially with long-term injuries. There are a lot of steps to go and they are all quite a way from that.

"It means nobody told me; 'fasten your seatbelt, make yourself ready, the boys will be in team training next week'. No, nothing changed really, but they are in a good way."

Striker Divock Origi is also unavailable through injury.
