June 23--Six people were injured Sunday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash near Palos Heights, officials said.
Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
A Chevrolet Equinox traveling south on Harlem Avenue turned left onto 143rd Street in front of a northbound Dodge Grand Caravan at about 1:30 p.m., Cook County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sophia Ansari said. The Dodge SUV struck the Chevrolet, then collided with a second car, a Lexus, Ansari said.
All four people riding in the Dodge -- a 38-year-old woman, 58-year-old woman, 62-year-old man and 79-year-old woman -- were taken to Palos Community Hospital, she said. The 38-year-old woman had injuries that were critical but not life-threatening, Ansari said.
Palos Heights Fire Protection District Chief Tim Sarhage described their injuries as "moderate," but an update on their condition was not available Monday.
The drivers of the other two vehicles were taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox for medical evaluation and were later released, Ansari said.
The driver of the Chevrolet, 43-year-old Susan Rocker, of Chicago Ridge, was cited for failure to yield right of way, Ansari said.
Sarhage initially described the accident as a two-vehicle crash and said that while occupants of one vehicle were able to get out of the car on their own, firefighters had to extricate those in another vehicle.
The Palos Fire Protection District, Alsip Fire Department, Crestwood Fire Department, Oak Forest Fire Department, North Palos Fire Protection District and the Orland Fire Protection District assisted in responding to the crash, Sarhage said.
