Six in 10 Londoners back a two-week December lockdown

Nearly six in ten Londoners back a two-week lockdown starting this month to combat the surging Omicron wave, a new poll suggested on Wednesday.

The Savanta ComRes survey showed half of UK adults, 51 per cent, support such a national set of stringent new restrictions, with the highest backing in the capital at 58 per cent.

Omicron now accounts for more than half of Covid infections in the city, according to initial analysis.

Health chiefs say cases are doubling in the capital in less than two days.

One third of adults across the nation, 32 per cent, oppose a lockdown, rising to almost two in five Conservative voters.

Almost half, 48 per cent, expect to cancel plans in the next two weeks due to Omicron, with the figure rising to 62 per cent among Londoners.

The London sample is a sub-section of a poll of more than 1,000 people so could have a margin of error of more than three per cent.

The survey highlighted how many people are prepared to endure new restrictions to fight Covid, despite nearly 100 Tory MPs opposing vaccine passports in a Commons vote on Tuesday.

Closing nightclubs won the backing of 63 per cent of adults across the country, and stopping large events 64 per cent.

Other restrictions tested such as the closing of pubs and restaurants got 44 per cent support, no indoor mixing of different households the same figure, only allowing people to leave their home for essential shopping, exercise, and work (47 per cent support), and the ‘rule of six’ indoors (55 per cent backing).

Chris Hopkins, political research director at Savanta ComRes, said: “The Omicron variant looks set to force the hand of the Government and, as things stand, it seems the public are braced for another Christmas of disruptions and restrictions.

“With half appearing in support of a lockdown amid rising cases, the Prime Minister again appears to have the public on his side if he does decide to make last-minute changes to the festive period.”

He added: “Despite this, though, support has dropped a little from last year, where we found almost two-thirds supported the reduction in ‘Christmas bubbles’ from five days to just one, and 73 per cent supported the introduction of ‘Tier 4’, limiting Christmas restrictions to just one household for people in those areas.

“Yes, public support for such draconian measures may still be high, but some are definitely less keen this year than they were last.”
