6 hospitalized after multi-vehicle crash on Lake Shore Drive

Nov. 06--Six people were injured Wednesday night when an SUV struck a cab and a Jeep near the S-curve on Lake Shore Drive, sending both vehicles crashing into a concrete median as the SUV sped away, police said.

Police said the SUV, a Chevy Tahoe, was driving erratically in the northbound lanes around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday when it struck the back of a cab in the 900 block of North Lake Shore Drive, just south of the S-curve.

The cab struck the outer concrete barrier and flipped onto its hood, according to Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro. The Tahoe then struck a Jeep from behind, which also struck the concrete barrier and spun out, Alfaro said.

The Tahoe continued driving north on Lake Shore Drive. Police are still searching for the driver.

Two people were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, and another person was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition, according to Chief Juan Hernandez, Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

Three others were taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital. Two were listed in fair-to-serious condition, and the third was listed in good condition. All those hospitalized were adults, Hernandez said.

Fire officials later said none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Traffic backed up as crews worked to clear the two cars. Lanes were reopened by 12:35 a.m.
