Six wild elephants have died in Thailand after falling into a notorious waterfall.

Officials said the incident occurred after a baby elephant slipped into a deep ravine in Khao Yai National Park in the south of the country.

Park rangers reported a number of elephants blocking a road near Haew Narok waterfall on Thursday and Friday.

At around 3am local time on Saturday (9pm UK time), officials heard elephant cries coming from the waterfall and went down to investigate.

They discovered a calf, aged about three, drowned in the first tier of the falls, before finding five adults dead at the bottom.

Two more elephants were spotted on a nearby cliff edge, and Thai authorities are trying to move them to safety.

Edwin Wiek, the founder of Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, said any elephants left in the herd will have difficulty surviving as the animals rely on each other for protection and finding food.

The incident will also take an emotional toll, as elephants have been known to display signs of grief.

"It's like losing half your family," Mr Wiek told the BBC. "There's nothing you can do, it's nature unfortunately," he said.

Around 300 wild elephants currently live in the park, which covers more than 2,000 square km (772 square miles) of forest and grassland.

It is home to various wild animals, including bears, elephants and gibbons, and is a popular destination for tourists.

Park chief Tunya Netithammakul ordered the waterfall to be temporarily closed to visitors following the incident.
