Six e-scooters seized in crackdown by police with two arrests and further prosecutions to follow

Police have seized six e-scooters and made two arrests in a crackdown on the electric machines.

Merpol Liverpool City Centre officers tweeted at 10.33pm today (Thursday) that other prosecutions are likely to follow.

They said: "Officers from A Block Response Team at Edge Lane have seized six e-scooters in the City Centre after an evening of action targeting e-scooter misuse & driving offences.

"Two arrests for disqual & drug driving & several other prosecution's to follow for driving & drug offences."

E-scooters are not illegal in the UK and you can buy, sell and own one perfectly legally. However, it is against the law to use an e-scooter in public – on pavements, footpaths, cycle lanes and in pedestrianised zones – unless it is rented as part of a recognised government-backed trial scheme.

Using an e-scooter on private land is OK but for public use they are classified in a way that means e-scooters are covered by the same laws that govern the use of cars and other motor vehicles.
