Six Degrees North to close Glasgow bar after 'huge challenges' of covid pandemic

Popular west end bar Six Degrees North has announced it has permanently shut its doors in Glasgow.

The north-east brewers, which has venues across Scotland, confirmed it would close its Dumbarton Road bar in Partick alongside its Edinburgh venue.

The decision was made as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, with the owners stating they had to "take a small step back" in order to keep their business healthy.

A statement from Six Degrees North owner Robert Lindsay reads: "Covid has brought huge challenges for all in our sector, financial instability and emotional & organisational stress. For many this has prompted much sole searching and reflection. It has forced the question, what is really important?

"Six°North is a business that has an international inspiration, but our heart belongs in the North East of Scotland. Our family, friends and the majority of our team are all here. What is important to me is that Six°North continues its journey without losing its soul, and continues to offer opportunity and reward to those that have been committed to our business over the last eight years. After over twelve months of reflection it’s obvious to me that the current business structure cannot deliver this.

"To achieve this we must take a small step back, consolidate our business in the short term and be in as strong a position as possible as markets and opportunities open up again post-Covid.

"We have made the difficult, and sometimes seemingly impossible decision, to refocus on our efforts and operations in the North East. This means we intend to build on what we have created in Stonehaven, Aberdeen, Laurencekirk and Dundee. It also means saying goodbye to Six°North Edinburgh and Six°North Glasgow. We have a great love for both of these venues, their brilliant customers, staff and communities surrounding them. They are more than just bars, and for that reason we want them to succeed with local operators who can be there every day giving you, our customers, the best experiences possible."

The statement confirms that a new operator will soon move into the Dumbarton Road premises, serving "an exciting food offer, quality cocktails, spirits and wines" as well offering six permanent Six Degrees North beers.

It continues: "Edinburgh unfortunately does not yet have new tenants. However, Dumbarton Road in Partick will soon bounce back into life with new key holders. The new operator will provide an exciting food offer, quality cocktails, spirits and wines and very important to us, they will offer six permanent lines of Six°North beer, continuing to feed the thirst built up over the past six years by you.

"It is the end for our central belt venue adventure, we are not returning home with our tail between our legs, but proud of what we brought, when we brought it, the staff that helped us and the customers that came through the door. We will be forever grateful and honoured to have served these people and to have been part of their communities."
