Six dead as heavy rain batters Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: Streets resembled turbulent rivers and farmlands turned into lakes as widespread torrential rain continued to batter most parts of Gujarat on Friday.

Six people died in rain-related incidents in the state - two each in Mahisagar and Kutch districts and one each in Panchmahal and Devbhumi Dwarka districts.

After a long hiatus, skies finally showered bounty on Ahmedabad city which recorded widespread rainfall. Usmanpura area got nearly 228 mm rain in just about three hours. Several underpasses remained closed for nearly three hours due to flooding. The city received an average of 87mm rainfall, the second highest of this season.

While there was no rain-related death in Saurashtra, normal life was badly disrupted in the districts as rain washed away roads, waters gushed into shops and flooded houses in rural areas of the region. Several state highways were heavily inundated, snapping connectivity between villages and towns.

Timely help from policemen and locals helped save the life of a man in Nakhatrana in Kutch after he was dragged away along with his scooter in the strong current on a flooded road. Many schools in Jamnagar declared a holiday in wake of heavy rain forecast.

The weather department said the cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and neighbourhood was bringing widespread rain in Gujarat. More heavy rain is forecast over the next few days.
