Six Covid-19 cases confirmed at Irish school as 'worrying' letter sent to parents

Six cases of Covid-19 have been reported in one Irish school as an urgent letter was sent to parents.

The secondary school in Co Offaly described the situation as "worrying" - but added that they believe all cases were picked up outside the facility.

Officials confirmed that there had been six cases in the school community within the last two weeks, including one teacher.

Public health experts have been notified and all close contacts have been identified.

And a letter from the principal to parents and guardians updated them on the situation.

They added that "no spread has been identified" within the school, but that one case was still under investigation.

The notice reads: "You may be aware that a number of cases of Covid-19 have been reported to our school.

"The number since the reopening of our school in March is six including one teacher, all in the last two weeks.

"In each case the virus was acquired outside the school but the person may have attended school while infectious.

"So far no spread has been identified although one current case is being examined.

"In each case the HSE identifies the close contacts and they are advised to stay out of the school for the appropriate length of time.

"This is a worrying time for all. We will continue to do our best to manage the situation and encourage all users of the school to take every precaution all of the time."
