Six counties hit by surge in new Covid-19 cases over last week amid staggering infection rates

Ireland is currently battling a devastating third wave of coronavirus infections as cases surge to levels that have not been seen since the pandemic began.

One of the key measures used by health officials to measure the scale of an outbreak in an area is the incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population over the last 14 days.

And after the post-Christmas surge in new infections, several counties saw their rates continuing to increase in last night's figures compared to the previous Saturday.

Monaghan remains the hardest-hit area in the country by this metric, seeing its already staggering rate increase from 2296.9 to 2891.5 over the last seven days.

While in the last week Limerick's incidence has jumped from 1660.9 to 2133.4, Dublin's has gone from 1340.7 to 1775.7, and Mayo's from 1111.1 to 1639.8.

The south-west has seen some of the starkest changes, with Waterford moving from 1386.7 to 2051.2 in the last week, and Wexford spiking from 1191.5 to 1870.1.
