The car was said to be carrying nine people when the accident happened in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Four of the children who died were siblings and have been named as Enzo Gabriel, two, Ana Laisa, four, Kemily Sophia, six, and Phandora, eight.

The other two children killed were said to be their cousins, Brunna Vitoria, three, and Erick, 12.

Two older children, aged 18 and 13, were taken to hospital with minor injuries, the Sun reports.

The family was returning from Lagoa de Cima to Tapera when witnesses said the driver tried to avoid a cyclist, lost control and fell off a bridge into a river.

Reports said the family friend was taking the children to spend the day at a popular tourist attraction.
