An Edinburgh couple enjoyed their own hilarious version of a 'Six by Nico' dinner during lockdown this week. Yasmin and Keith were due to celebrate Keith's birthday in the capital, however any typical birthday trips out for dinner were dashed due to the current lockdown measures from the government.
Instead, Yasmin came up with the idea to recreate a taster menu at home, going by the name 'Six by Yasmino', a play on the popular Edinburgh restaurant Six by Nico. Featuring a self drawn menu and courses such as 'turkey dinosaur and smoked cheese slider' or 'fish fingers, peas & tartare', each course was presented in a traditional gourmet style with a paired wine.
Yasmin said: "I was trying to come up with something fun and a bit different for Keith’s birthday given that we would be stuck in the flat on lockdown. We had recently been to a few different taster menu restaurants which we both loved so that was the inspiration.
"I tried to think of the most old school items you’d find in a freezer and put a wee fancy-ish twist on it. I had an idea of what I wanted all the plates to look like in my head and genuinely just went for it on the day! Was pretty buzzin about how it turned out myself.”
Keith was unaware of Yasmin's plans for his birthday, and was hugely pleased with the outcome, stating:
“I was so surprised & impressed. I knew she was planning on cooking something but had no idea what. It wasn’t until she handed me the menu, although I still didn’t know what each course was going to be, which were all amazing.
"It was so creative & thoughtful given the current situation of not being able to go to a restaurant. I’m a lucky guy.”
The full menu featured six courses, including fish, chicken and a dessert:
