Six bouncers admit part in ugly mass brawl which left teen rugby star permanently deaf

Six bouncers have admitted being part of a brawl which left an 18-year-old rugby league starlet with bleeds on the brain and permanently deaf.

St Helens academy player Joe Sharratt was surrounded by the doorman who rained kicks and punches on him and his friend Leon Cooper.

The attack happened outside the Factory nightclub in Manchester City centre back on December 2, 2018 which left the teen in hospital.

Police said Mr Sharratt , who was left deaf in one ear, was treated like a "punchbag ."

Lee Clark, 42, Imran Ilyas, 41, Mohammed Saleem, 22, Javad Soliman-Bolagh, 25, Amjad Yasin, 38, and Gareth Carr have all pleaded guilty to affray.

Carr, 21, of Denbigh Road, Denton, has also admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Clark, of Epson Avenue, Sale; Ilyas, of Gainsborough Avenue, Oldham; Saleem, of Kingsway, Manchester; Soliman-Bolagh, of Higher Lane, Whitefield; Yasin, of Latimer Street, Oldham and Carr are due to be sentenced at the end of this month

Carr and Soliman-Bolagh were due to stand trial on Monday, but instead pleaded guilty to the offences.

The Crown Prosecution Service are no longer pursuing charges against a seventh man, who was also due to stand trial.

At around 3.20am on Sunday, December 2, 2018, police were called to reports that a man had been assaulted outside the nightclub on Princess Street.

Officers attended and Mr Sharratt, then 18, was taken to hospital with a serious head injury.

Footage of the assault, which had been shared on social media and taken from CCTV, was shown in court.

It showed several men attacking Mr Sharratt and Mr Cooper with kicks and punches.

As the rugby star fell onto his hands and knees the bouncers are seen beating one of them in his back.

Mr Sharratt can then be seen on the ground, unconscious.

Prosecutor Hugh McKee said: “We would say all six attacked both Mr Sharratt and Mr Cooper.”

Mr McKee said Mr Sharratt was “knocked to the ground” and suffered two bleeds - a sub-arachnoid and a sub-dural hemorrhage.

“He has permanent hearing loss completely in one ear.”

The prosecutor added: “Of course none of them go to the aid of Mr Sharratt as they should have done.”

At the time, Mr Sharratt was described by club officials as a "top academic achiever" and of "impeccable character."

He was hoping to represent England.

Factory admitted they were "shocked" by the footage and promised to sack security staff found to be involved.

A day after the appalling violence, Gordon Lamb, Professional Security operations director, confirmed the doormen had been dismissed a day after the incident, adding he was "disgusted and appalled" by the actions of his staff.

Factory had its licence temporarily suspended after the attack on Mr Sharratt, but almost four weeks later it was reinstated.

Strict conditions were imposed requiring bouncers to wear body cameras as part of the agreement and the club having to hire a new security company with accredited door staff.

There will also be "mystery shopper-style" visits to the venue to ensure it is complying with the conditions.

Great Manchester Police had previously said it believed the venue was "either incompetent" or involved in a "cover-up" of the incident, which was not reported to them.

But the force later stepped back from that opinion, suggesting the matter was "not as serious as it first appeared" and the club believed police would have been automatically alerted by the ambulance service.
