A man is fighting for his life in hospital following an aggravated burglary in Wigan.

Six arrests have been made after the break-in resulted in violence, police said.

Officers were called to Wellfield Road at 2.15pm on Sunday following reports of a 'disturbance'.

When police attended, they took four people to hospital, a GMP spokesman said.

One man, aged 43, was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A 23-year-old man was also taken to hospital. He has since been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

An 18-year-old man also went to hospital but has since been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault.

Both remain in custody for questioning.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and has since been taken to hospital.

A 24-year-old man and two women aged 44 and 19 have been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault.

All three remain in custody for questioning.

A cordon is in place as officers investigate (M.E.N.)

Detectives are now trying to find two suspects who they believe fled in a silver car in the direction of Acacia Crescent following the incident.

A cordon is currently in place on Wellfield Road, police said.

Police have ramped up patrols around the area following what they believe to be an 'isolated incident'.

Officers are urging anyone with information to get in touch.

Det Supt Howard Millington said: “Whilst we have six people in custody I would also like to stress that our investigation does not stop here and take this opportunity to reassure the public that we are doing everything we can to piece together exactly what has happened.

“Although we believe that this is an isolated incident there will be a higher police presence throughout the evening and I would urge members of the local community to speak with officers if you have any concerns or questions.

“We have a dedicated team of officers who are working tirelessly to find the remaining  two of offenders and bring them to justice as soon as possible.

“Did you see the silver car making off in the area at the time of the incident? I am asking the public to please get in touch if you have any information at all that could assist our enquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 5307, quoting incident number 1277 of 16/06/19.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
