Six arrested and garda injured as balaclava-clad 'protesters' clash in Dublin

Six people were arrested and a garda suffered burns to his hand while "protesters" in balaclavas clashed in the city centre.

Shocking scenes show groups line out on Pearse St covering their faces as they shout abuse at another group across the road from them.

One group of right-wing nationalists had organised a march, but were met by counter demonstrators.

Despite being vastly outnumbered gardai managed to control the situation.

It's understood one officer was injured after suffering burns to his hand.

The marches went across the city and angry words were exchanged between the groups from the quays right up to Leinster House.

Six people were then arrested on Kildare St.

A senior source told Dublin Live that gardai came under attack by some balaclava-clad people while on Pearse St and called the group involved "shadowy".

He said: ”One week out from the General Election and you have sinister masked balaclava-clad men injuring gardai in the streets.

“These shadowy groups are a threat to law and order.“

A garda spokeswoman confirmed the injury and said the six men arrested have since been released.

She said: "Uniformed and Public order members were in attendance at a protest on Kildare St today the 1st February 2020.

"Six arrests were made. All males arrested, have been released pending a court appearance at a later date.

"Investigations are ongoing".
