Six areas in Bristol that could help the city stay in Tier 3

The number of coronavirus cases being recorded in different parts of an area can vary significantly.

However, Government decisions around the Tier system are made for a whole local authority area.

This can lead to a situation where neighbourhoods with low infection rates are stuck in Tier 3 because of high infection rates in areas miles away.

Bristol's coronavirus cases have been rising over the past week and the city, together with North Somerset, was moved back into Tier 3 restrictions on Boxing Day - just one week after restaurants and bars reopened while our city was temporarily in Tier 2.

More areas across the UK are expected to be placed into tougher lockdown restrictions today when health secretary Matt Hancock reveals changes to tiers. You can follow our liveblog on the announcement here.

However, there are still some places in Bristol which have a case rate of below 100 per 100,000 people - meaning they could help keep the city in Tier 3.

Listed in ascending order, they are:

The areas with the lowest infection rates

(The number of actual positive cases of Covid-19 in the seven days up to Thursday, December 24 is shown, with the average case rate in brackets)

Barton Hill: 5 cases (rate 61)

Knowle West: 4 (53.1)

Bristol City Centre: 15 (79.2)

Where is the data coming from?

You can see the latest national data on the government's website.

The map displays weekly data, which are updated everyday.

The data can be viewed by local authority but also by smaller sections called 'Middle Super Output Areas'.

The map highlights which areas of the nation have three or more confirmed cases of the virus and colour co-coordinates the areas by how many cases they have.
