Sitting in Limbo: Fans devastated by Anthony Bryan's story amid Windrush scandal

BBC's Sitting in Limbo is a moving feature-length drama that pries open the heartbreaking real-life story of Anthony Bryan.

At the centre of writer Stephen S Thompson's drama is his brother, who desperately fought to prove he was a legal citizen in Britain.

The captivating programme magnifies the issues surrounding the Windrush scandal and the devastating effects of British bureaucracy.

Anthony is just one of hundreds of the Windrush generation - who came from commonwealth countries following WWII - that were targeted by UK immigration officials.

In the last few years it has come to light that hundreds of Windrush victims had been denied legal rights and even deported.

Anthony came to Britain age eight. Having paid taxes and lived in the country for over 50 years, it was in 2015 when he was dramatically told he had no right to stay.

He became a victim of Theresa May's 'hostile environment policy' and he was forced out of his job and unable to receive benefits.

In the years that followed he was detained in an immigration centre twice and threated with deportation before a lawyer got involved.

Now 62 years old, Bryan still lives in the UK and has not received any compensation from the government.

His harrowing story has now become the topic of conversation, as viewers furiously slammed government officials who have been portrayed in Sitting in Limbo.

"What an absolutely heartbreaking portrayal of Anthony Bryan in Sitting in Limbo. It shocked me so much. Horrendous treatment of our own citizens," wrote one viewer.

Another added: "For anyone with the audacity to dare state that "Britain is not a racist country", watch #SittingInLimbo - the Windrush scandal is a reflection of the shocking levels of institutionalised racism that exist in the UK."

Other viewers called on politicians to watch the drama themselves.

"Cameron, May did you watch sitting in limbo? If you had any humility you would hang your head in shame. Anthony Bryan has more integrity in his little finger than you two have together," wrote another.

Labour MP David Lammy wrote: "Racism, at its root, comes from ignorance. If the last two weeks has left you wanting to learn more about black British history, don’t miss #SittingInLimbo. We are here because you were there."

Set amid the growing momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement, Thompson's retelling amplifies the human burden and devastating costs of a flawed system.
