Site for post-Brexit border customs post at Holyhead still being 'identified' by UK Government

UK Government says it is “currently identifying” a suitable location for a customs facility near Holyhead port in preparation for already delayed checks on EU traffic.

Exports to the EU from Britain have been subject to controls since January 1, but the UK Government decided to opt for a phased approach on EU imports to give hauliers and businesses more time to adapt.

Checks were due to be introduced in stages from April 1 and from July 1 but UK Government has been told the network of border posts will not be built on time - and in Holyhead they are still finalising where the site will be.

Welsh Government is responsible for new post Brexit checks on goods such as animals, plants and products of animal origin entering Wales from the Republic of Ireland.

They have announced that Plot 9 at Parc Cybi has been selected as the site for this border post and are fast-tracing this through planning under a Special Development Order.

HMRC needs a nearby plot to deal with customs checks, which come under the responsibility of the UK Government.

The UK Government has blamed the pandemic for moving the deadline for checks to start on EU traffic.

A HMRC spokesperson said: “HMRC has committed to provide a facility to support the Port of Holyhead and is currently identifying a suitable location close to the Welsh Government facility that will support a streamlined customer journey.”
