The site for a new sport and recreation centre in Lake Macquarie is expected to be revealed in a matter of weeks with MP Greg Piper saying the Office of Sport and Origin Energy are "close to finalising a deal".
The unveiling of a site will finally turn the page on the controversial closure of the Myuna Bay centre, which was shut early last year due to risks associated with the stability of the nearby ash dam.
"A number of tests have had to be carried out on several sites and that has taken time, but things remain on track," Mr Piper said.
"The Office of Sport is close to finalising a deal with Origin on a new site at Eraring.
"My understanding is the site will be confirmed very soon."
The new facility will be the first sport and recreation centre built in NSW for decades.
Sports Minister Geoff Lee said in December it would be a "like for like" replacement of Myuna Bay.
At that time, the Newcastle Heraldrevealed two sites in Eraring that were being considered.

Mr Piper said Origin Energy remained "committed to funding construction" of the centre.
Community consultation is expected to be undertaken once a site is proposed.
