Sitar star among WOMADelaide acts announced so far

Soulful sitar player Anoushka Shankar will make her return to the WOMADelaide festival next year, joining a typically rich melting pot of musicians from across the globe.

Shankar, daughter of the great sitarist Ravi, is one of 18 acts so far revealed by organisers as part of next year's line-up for the four-day music, arts and dance spectacle.

"There are artists from Brazil, from Chile, from Ghana, from Cuba," festival director Ian Scobie said.

Other performers include British dubster Adrian Sherwood, American jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington and Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela.

"We're really thrilled by the diversity and the range," Mr Scobie said.

Anoushka Shankar previously performed at WOMADelaide in 2010 alongside her father, who pioneered the popularisation of traditional Indian music outside of India and who died in 2012.

Singer-songwriter Dan Sultan and electronic group The Avalanches are among Australian acts who will perform.

Mr Scobie said advanced sales for the festival had so far been "great".

"One of the interesting things about this line-up is the artists whose music crosses over into various fields," he said.

"There's a group from Iraq, the Rahim Alhaj Trio, who have the most beautiful, beautiful sounds, but it's absolutely contemporary and appealing.

"That sense of surprise is really what's been the most continuous thread of the festival.

"The festival's changed quite a bit over the years. It's expanded its footprint within the park. We now have seven stages."

English structural artists Architects of Air will also return for the construction of an inflatable sculpture called Arboria.

The festival will run from March 9 to 12.

Organisers will reveal the full line-up later this year.
