Sisters unable to see granny during lockdown pay loving tribute with 'Factory Girl' song

Three sisters have sent a heartwarming message to their grandmother by paying homage to her factory working roots.

Sisters Sadie, 10, Penny, 7, and Darey 4, using the help of local musician legend Roy Arbuckle, came up with the song "My Granny was a Factory Girl".

The siblings would regularly visit their grandmother from Stockport every month but have been unable to recently due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The song is dedicated to the legacy of Derry's factory girls, in which a vast majority of those who did the job were women. Derry became a hotspot for shirt factories in the 19th century with more than 40 factories based in the city by the 1920s.

However, the industry has all but been wiped out in the face of global competition since the early 2000s. In acclaim to all of those workers, including the girls' granny, Sadie Harkin, who was once a factory worker herself, a poignant tribute was written and filmed remotely.

And when the family became aware of the unprecedented financial crisis facing Derry's Foyle Hospice, they decided to open a JustGiving Page to help.

Speaking to Belfast Live, a spokesperson for the hospice said: "Foyle Hospice was contacted by Yvonne, the mother of three young girls who created andrecorded a song about the Factory Girls of the city.

"The song is dedicated to their Granny, who they have not seen in a long time because of Coronavirus restrictions.

"The family wanted to support Foyle Hospice and the girls set up a dedicated JustGiving Page to help raise money, they initially set a target of £250 and have since exceeded that.

"Foyle Hospice is honoured to be associated with such a beautiful project and are grateful to the little ladies who are melting the hearts of our donors and communities further afield.

"At an early age these sisters understand the importance of giving and we are delighted to have such young and dedicated supporters."
