Sisters pay tribute to beloved dad in memorial hockey match

A pair of teenage sisters have paid special tribute to their late father, who tragically died last year after battling coronavirus.

Paul Dewan passed away suddenly aged 53 just prior to Christmas last year, after suffering from coronavirus and then blood clots in his legs.

The dad-of-two's death devastated his family, including daughters Jenna, 16, and Darci, 15.

However, 10 months on the girls from Cambuslang decided to organise a charity hockey match in memory of Paul, who was heavily involved in school activities and supported Jenna and Darci every Saturday from the sidelines.

It took place at Hamilton College, where students faced their teachers in the match with all proceeds going to Sport in Mind, a mental health charity that aims to use sporting activities to help youngsters going through tough times emotionally.

And despite the teachers achieving a narrow 1-0 victory on the day, the event was a huge success and a fantastic £1680 was raised for the charity.

The girls' mum Julie Dewan told Lanarkshire Live it was the perfect way to remember Paul, who would have been very proud of them.

She said: "Everything went so well and raising so much money for the charity was fantastic.

"The teachers played really well, I think the girls didn't expect the teachers to be as good as they were, so they got a bit of shock.

"The whole thing was great. The girls did me very proud, and we want to say thanks to everyone for taking part.

"We hope to organise the match annually, so hopefully we'll be back next year to raise more money for charity, I know Paul would be so proud.

"It was the first time in a long time that parents were allowed to come along to the school and watch an event so that was nice to get everyone involved again."

In December last year, Paul fell ill with Covid, before suffering some leg pain. Doctors found blood clots, and after spending a few days in Hairmyres Hospital, he sadly passed away.

Jenna and Darci had been in touch with one of their teachers to have the school host a tribute event in memory of their beloved dad.

And to celebrate the occasion a trophy presentation took place where the winners of the match were presented with the Dewan Cup.

Julie added: "Paul was so involved at the school, he even played Santa for them. And he went to the girls' games every Saturday. He was a big part of Hamilton College and loved getting involved in everything.

"Everybody knew Paul and it was a fitting tribute to him. It was lovely.

"As much as it's painful, it's been 10 months, it was a nice way to respect him and great for the school to allow us to do that.

"I'm very proud. It's only been 10 months but my girls have achieved so much since then despite everything happening.

"They've been fantastic and the school has been so supportive and looked after them from day one."

Paying special tribute to her late husband, Julie told how much Paul loved his family.

She said: "After Paul died we found out that the names he had for us saved on his phone were, for the girls 'my reason for living' and mine was 'the boss' so he absolutely doted on those girls from the minute they were born.

"He was just that typical dad who looked after them, changed their nappies, read them stories and took them everywhere. He was always there for the girls."

The fundraising page is still live and donations can be made here.
