Sister vows to be at the river everyday looking for missing man Alex Johnson

The family of Alex Johnson are desperate to get him "out of that dark river" as a public search along Newcastle's River Tyne bids to find the missing 24-year-old.

Alex is believed to have fallen from the Tyne Bridge in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The ChronicleLive reported that Alex's family and friends have urged the public to participate in Saturday's search as they desperately try to find him.

Alex's sister Ashleigh Marr said: "I will be at the river everyday looking for him until we find him.

"Please could I ask anyone, people who knew Alex and people who didn’t to come together and help us in this search.

"If anyone has any spare time or is in the area – even for just half-an hour.

"Don't look towards the buildings on your walk - look towards the water."

Ashleigh said her brother was wearing a green parka jacket, grey joggers and blue Nike trainers when he vanished.

"The river is dark, cold and dirty," she said. "Please help us get our Alex out of there. He shouldn’t be in there."

Northumbria Police confirmed that they received a report of a concern for welfare for a man on the Tyne Bridge at 2.15am on Tuesday.

Ever since, family and friends have been searching desperately the River Tyne, and have turned to social media to urge others to assist.

A Facebook post calling on the public to help in the search has been shared nearly 7000 times in the days following Alex's dissapearance.

A public search has been arranged on Saturday morning in an attempt to cover as much ground as possible from Byker through to Newburn.

The family has asked that anyone available to help in the search to meet on the Gateshead side of the Swing Bridge for 11am.

"The area believed to be the most likely area [to find Alex] is very vast and covers from the Tyne Bridge up to Blaydon," sister Ashleigh said.

Inquiries into Alex's disappearance remain ongoing, and Northumbria Police has urged anyone with information to contact 101 quoting reference number 60 16/04/19.
