Sister of Celtic Boys Club abuse victim hails 'courageous' late brother after 'class action' lawsuit launched

The sister of a late Celtic Boys Club abuse victim has hailed her 'brave and courageous' sibling as other survivors launch a US-style ' class action ' lawsuit against the Hoops.

Andrew Gray was abused in the 1980s and came forward to police in 2016.

He died in a swimming accident aged 41 in Australia the next year.

Sister Michelle and Mum Helen have long fought for recognition for Andrew and gave evidence to the Independent Review of Sexual Abuse in Scottish Football panel on his behalf.

We told yesterday about the plans by Glasgow-based Thompsons Solicitors to use new Scots laws to bring about the case against Parkhead bosses, which would potentially lead to damages in the multi-millions.

Up to 25 victims of historical abuse at Celtic Boys Club are banding together to mount the “super case” in what is understood as the first case of its kind against a football team in legal history.

Michelle Gray hailed her brother and said she believed he would still be alive if not for the abuse.

She said: "My brave and courageous wee brother should be here today.

"If those in authority he pleaded with for help following his disclosure had given him the support and validation that he deserved I’ve no doubt that he would be.

"Please, never forget him.

She added: "Your courage, given all you endured as children, will live on forevermore."

Group proceedings were only enacted into the country’s legal system last year and this would be one of the first of its kind to call before a judge.

Such actions allow groups of two or more people with the same, or similar, claims to raise a single action in the Court of Session.

Celtic previously said it’s “appalled by any form of historic abuse” but maintained it is a “separate entity” to the boys club.

Four men associated with Celtic Boys Club or Celtic have been convicted of abuse.

A notice published by Thompson's Solicitors urged anyone with a case to come forward.

It reads: "The group proceedings relate to claims for compensation on behalf of pursuers who were abused... while playing football at Celtic Boys Club.

"Individuals who have not previously made a claim and wish to do so should contact Thompsons as soon as possible..."

Celtic FC have previously insisted the Boy's Club was a separate entity from the main team.

It said in a statement: "The club is continuing to deal with these sensitive matters in conjunction with its advisers.

"The club again expresses its sincere sympathy, regret and sorrow to those affected and reiterates that it will stand by its responsibilities, respecting the due process of law.”
