Sisi Warns of 3rd COVID-19 Wave in Egypt

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi warned on Sunday against a third wave of coronavirus in Egypt, stressing the need to adhere to the precautionary measures.

During a speech marking Mother’s Day, Sisi urged citizens to adhere to precautionary measures, especially during the holy month of Ramdan, during which people gather and exchange visits.

“We are on the threshold of the third wave,” he warned, stressing that the state is exerting all efforts to provide vaccines.

Sisi said that Egypt survived the first and second waves of the virus, hoping to overcome the upcoming wave as well.

“The government continues its efforts to provide vaccines, but we need to adhere to the precautionary measures," Sisi said.

This came as the Ministry of Health announced 644 new COVID-19 cases and 45 deaths. It also reported 645 infections and 40 deaths a day earlier.

As of Saturday, Egypt has recorded a total of 194,771 cases, including 149,489 recoveries, while death toll reached 11,557.

Head of the parliamentary Health Committee Ashraf Hatem asserted the safety of the coronavirus vaccines, citing the statements of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) regarding the AstraZeneca vaccine.
