Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi stressed Wednesday during a meeting with Italian Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio his confidence in reaching final conclusions in the investigation into the murder of the Italian student, Julio Reggini, in light of the state’s strong will to solve the case.
Reggini, 28, disappeared in Cairo on January 25, 2016, and his body was found at Alexandria Desert Road with signs of torture a couple of days later.
Di Maio appreciated the cooperation of the Egyptian authorities in trying to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
He asserted his country’s keenness to boost cooperation with Egypt in the coming period, hailing Cairo’s economic reforms that have started to bear fruit.
The two sides agreed on the need for collaboration in economy and trade, especially in the energy sector, in light of Egypt's efforts to become a regional trade hub for natural gas.
Illegal migration across the Mediterranean also topped the meeting’s agenda, as Sisi showcased Egypt’s efforts to combat smuggling of migrants.
“There has not been a single case of illegal migration from Egypt since 2016,” Sisi said.
He stressed that Egypt does not host camps for the displaced, rather the refugees are integrated into the Egyptian society and enjoy services as citizens do.
The meeting was attended by a number of officials including Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El-Molla, Minister of Trade and Industry Amr Nassar, head of the General Intelligence Abbas Kamel, and the Italian ambassador to Cairo.
