Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi received in Cairo on Thursday Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar.
Haftar briefed Sisi on the developments in Libya. Sisi, for his part, underscored Cairo’s support for efforts to combat terrorism in Libya.
Sisi backed the role of the LNA "to restore the pillars of legitimacy and create an environment conducive to reaching political solutions,” said a presidential statement.
He also heralded Haftar's drive to push back against extremist militias.
Haftar, in turn, hailed Egypt for supporting the Libyan people, underlining the strength of the historic ties that bind the two people and their countries.
He also praised Cairo’s efforts in combating terrorism and supporting peaceful solutions to Arab crises.
Haftar also detailed to Sisi efforts to confront foreign meddling in Libya’s affairs, which he said are aimed at smuggling weapons, fighters and terrorists into the country.
