Sisi Meets Hadi: Egypt Refuses for Yemen to Become Platform to Threaten Arab World

Egypt's President Sisi meets his Yemeni counterpart Hadi at the presidential palace in Cairo, Egypt, August 13, 2018. (Egyptian Presidency)

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi stressed on Monday his rejection of Yemen becoming a platform to threaten the security and stability of the Arab world and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Mandeb Strait.

He made his remarks while receiving in Cairo his Yemeni counterpart Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.

He expressed during a press conference after the talks Cairo’s “firm faith that the stability and security of Yemen is the utmost importance of not only Egypt’s national security, but the entire region.”

He also voiced his commitment to support the stability and security of Yemen and its legitimate government.

Resolving the Yemeni crisis demands greater efforts and bolstering cooperation and coordination between Arab countries against mounting challenges, Sisi continued.

For his part, Hadi stated that Egypt’s support for his country will continue until its stability is restored, which will positively impact the region.

Egypt firmly defends the affairs of the Arab nation, he declared.

He informed Sisi of the latest developments in Yemen and efforts to restore legitimacy. They also discussed regional and international developments and issues of joint interest, especially the danger posed by the Iran-backed Houthi militias against the Red Sea.

The two leaders later oversaw the signing of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between the Egyptian and Yemeni central banks.
