GamesMaster is set to return to TV for the first time since the 1990s.

Sir Trevor McDonald has confirmed he will take on the role of the GamesMaster for the video game series, which will be broadcast on E4 later this year.

The veteran journalist and newsreader takes on the position filled in the 1990s by the late Sir Patrick Moore.

Sir Trevor said: “I am delighted to be taking on this iconic role for a new generation of viewers.”

GamesMaster, which sees celebrities, gamers and fans take part in video game challenges, was first broadcast from 1992 to 1998.

Former Tonight host Sir Trevor will set up challenges and watch over competitors as they engage in virtual battles across different games in a bid to win the Golden Joystick Trophy.

The three-part revival will be co-hosted by Robert Florence, Frankie Ward and Ty Logan.

Channel 4 says: "The series will see celebrities, gaming stars and super fans all take part in challenges, races and epic fights.

"Through virtual battles across a range of games, the competitors will try everything in their power to claim a legendary Golden Joystick Trophy. But whilst they play, they’ll be watched over by the all-knowing GamesMaster, famously portrayed in the original by Sir Patrick Moore."
