Sir Tom Jones in tears as Stevie Wonder made a surprise appearance on The Voice

Fans of the ITV singing contest The Voice were in tears as two musical legends were reunited.

There was a surprise appearance by superstar Stevie Wonder on the show as he paid homage to his pal Sir Tom Jones - and the show's coach welled up as Stevie sang for him.

The I Just Called To Say I Love You singer popped up on screen to wish his friend a happy 80th birthday and to share some emotional words.

The 70-year-old Grammy Award-winner had Sir Tom welling up as he sang one of the Welsh icon's hits It's Not Unusual.

"I love you with my whole heart," the American hitmaker told Sir Tom.

"Promise me you'll do your best to give us another 80 years.

"Tom Jones god bless you."

And the tears were flowing as viewers watched the magical moment at home.

"Flippin eck...Stevie Wonder...I'm in awe," tweeted one.

"Actually sobbing at that Stevie Wonder message to Tom Jones," said another.

"Hormones are all over the place. I’m now crying at Stevie Wonder congratulating Sir Tom Jones on his 80th birthday and seeing Sir Tom nearly cry," tweeted another.

Another fan wrote: "The Tom Jones and Stevie Wonder bromance has me EMOSH."

And another commented: "Blimey, Stevie Wonder singing It's Not Unusual to Tom Jones on The Voice was really quite a moment. Tom was in tears."

"Got goosebumps Tom Jones and Stevie Wonder wow," remarked another.

The pair have a friendship that goes back decades.

Stevie appeared on Sir Tom's variety TV show This Is Tom Jones in 1969 when he was just 19.

They sang a medley of their greatest hit songs.

In 1992 the two were on stage together again on the TV show Tom Jones: The Right Time.

This time Stevie serenaded Sir Tom at the piano with It's Not Unusual.
