Sir Sean Connery: Edinburgh locals remember Fountainbridge's famous milkman

Local from Sir Sean Connery's native Fountainbridge have paid tribute to the legendary actor after he died on Sunday aged 90.

Arguably one of Edinburgh's most famous sons, Sir Sean Connery was born in Fountainbridge in August 1930, where his first job was delivering milk to locals.

Recalling a 2009 conversation with a taxi driver in the city, Sean Connery said: "When I took a taxi during a recent Edinburgh Film Festival, the driver was amazed that I could put a name to every street we passed. 'How come?' he asked. 'As a boy I used to deliver milk round here,' I said. 'So what do you do now?'

"That was rather harder to answer."

Of course, Fountainbridge has seen much change from the area it was when Sean Connery was doing his milk round, but locals were still keen to celebrate Connery's connection to the area.

Supervisor Ollie Pardish, 29, said: “I think obviously the initial reaction is to be sad but I think we should all come together to celebrate a true Scottish icon. He’s a national treasure.”

Davide Pavone only arrived in Fountainbridge two months ago from Italy to study but quickly learned of the area’s links to Sir Sean.

Colin James Barr said Sir Sean was a 'legend' (DAILY RECORD)

Davide, 33, said: “I was a bit shocked to hear he died because I only watched one of his films a few months ago, the Untouchables.

“I really loved it, it’s a nice movie.

"He was known around the world because of his movies, in Italy too.”

Colin James Barr, 55, said: “He’s probably most famous for James Bond but he was a lovely man and what a life - he’s a legend.

Jillian Kowalchuk is from Canada but enjoyed watching Sir Sean Connery's movies (DAILY RECORD)

“When you look at the true greats, Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn, he’s right up there at the top of that category - and he’s from Edinburgh.”

Tech founder Jillian Kowalchuk, from Canada, told the Daily Record: “I was always a big fan, so much so that me and my sister, whenever we’d think of a Scottish person we thought of Sean Connery and did a pretty good impression.

“He was definitely my favourite Bond and he was someone you could rely on.

"Whatever film he chose was really good and well done.

Rachel Cartledge said a statue of Sir Sean Connery could be erected in Fountainbridge (Daily Record)

“My sister messaged me this morning saying ‘RIP Sean Connery’. What a life he had and he lived to 90, you can’t ask for much more.”

Student Rachel Cartledge, 18, said: “It’s sad. I didn’t really realise he was from around here till today.

"They should build a statue of him, why not.”
