Sir Sean Connery: Edinburgh Airport bosses turn down call to rename after Fountainbridge star

After nearly 3,000 signed a petition calling for Edinburgh Airport to be renamed after the late Sean Connery, bosses have said they have no plans to rebrand.

A petition had been set up in an attempt to convince Edinburgh Airport to rename after Connery, from Fountainbridge, who died aged 90 last month.

The Change.org petition read: "Liverpool has John Lennon airport, Belfast has George Best airport and with the death of one of her most famous sons Edinburgh should have a Sir Sean Connery airport."

So far the petition has had 2,879 signatures, with supporters backing the call enthusiastically.

Supporter Stephen Stewart wrote: "This is a deserved recognition of a truly magnificent actor and human being who was revered globally."

Despite the enthusiasm, an Edinburgh Airport spokesman said they had no plans to rename currently.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport said: “If we ever consider renaming the airport, then we would have a wealth of famous and historic Scots to consider, and Sean Connery would absolutely be one of those names.

“There are no current plans to do so.”
