Sir Rod Stewart pays emotional tribute to late father ahead of Scottish Music Awards honour

Sir Rod Stewart is set to be honoured at the prestigious Scottish Music Awards this weekend and wishes his 'dear old dad' were here to see it.

The Maggie May singer is just one of the big names being celebrated at Glasgow's iconic Barrowland Ballroom this weekend for the Nordoff Robbins fundraiser. Rod, 77, is joined by the likes of Paolo Nutini, Gerry Cinnamon, Wet Leg, Craig Logan and Rhianne Downey in being nominated for an accolade.

The awards celebrate the best of home-grown Scottish talent and the Do Ya Think I'm Sexy star is up for the Specsavers Outstanding Achievement in Music Award.

The Hoops-daft singer, who recently enjoyed a trip to Glasgow visiting the Celtic FC training grounds, paid an emotional tribute to his late Scottish father. “In all my days I never ever dreamt I’d be receiving an award from the land of my Father. This will be undoubtedly an emotional evening for me, I just wish my dear old Dad (a Hibs supporter by the way) was here to enjoy it. Thank you so much everyone.”

Paisley superstar Paolo Nutini is up for two awards - Guitar Guitar’s Best Album Award and Ticketmaster’s Best Live Act Award - ahead of his five highly anticipated homecoming shows in Glasgow later this year. Meanwhile, Isle of Wight duo Wet Leg are nominated for SWG3’s Best UK Artist Award.

The band said: “It’s such an honour to be nominated for the SWG3 Best UK Artist Award, especially considering all the admirable work they do for Nordoff Robbins.

“Our music developed during lockdown when we were all struggling with the newfound uncertainty of the world around us, so we know what it’s like to use music as a tool for healing. It’s great to be involved with an organisation like Nordoff Robbins that recognises the true power of music to help people connect and communicate.”

Lewis Capaldi, Altered Images, The View, Dylan John Thomas, Ewan McVicar, Gun, Peat & Diesel and Tamzene are set to be in attendance at the star-studded event.
