Sir Rod Stewart opens up to ITV Loose Women panel about 'scary' cancer battle

Sir Rod Stewart opened up to the Loose Women hosts on Tuesday about his battle with a "rare type" of cancer.

The rocker, 76, admitted "I did lose my voice" due to thyroid cancer.

He joined the panel of Charlene White, Coleen Nolan, Brenda Edwards and his wife Penny Lancaster to discuss the release of his new album titled The Tears of Hercules and the audience were shocked at his cancer revelation.

The NHS website describes thyroid cancer as a rare form of the disease which affects the thyroid gland which is at the base of the neck and produces hormones.

Rod told the show: "I had a touch of thyroid cancer, it was over and out within 10 minutes."

Thankfully his treatment was a success and Rod admitted that he didn't have to fight cancer "for months and months".

"It was really easy to get rid of," he confessed.

He said that while the recovery was safe, he got a scare when he lost his voice, saying "it had totally gone".

Brenda, who was fourth in the second series of X Factor, praised Rod's resilience. She said: "You're taking that voice on a tour in 2022? Amazing."

The Maggie May singer then joked that his iconic voice was now here to stay. "Oh yeah, the voice is back now, as you can hear!"

His sarcasm led to laughter from the panel before the singer looked back on how he feared for his career due to the diagnosis.

He continued: "It was actually 30 years ago. It was scary because I couldn't sing a note."

Rod revealed the procedure wasn't very nice as he discussed it further. "You know, they chop right through your throat all the muscles are torn apart and they've all got memories so they have to remember again."

He then gushed about his wife's achievements since she joined the police force following a stint on Channel 4's Famous and Fighting Crime show in 2019.

The series saw celebs shadow official on-duty police officers and Rod proudly of her new career: "Oh man, she’s saved lives, talking people out of jumping off the bridges."

The singer previously said he "cant sleep" while she patrols the streets at night.

Sharing how his concerns disturb his rest, he told Magic Radio for Prince's Trust Day: "I don't sleep, I don't sleep when she's out on the beat. Until I know, she's safe in the car."
