Sir Rod Stewart illness forces legend to cancel show as fans urge him to 'stay safe'

Fans of Sir Rod Stewart have been left disappointed after the musician was forced to cancel a show due to illness. Sir Rod was set to perform at Geelong in Australia for the next date in his tour on Saturday afternoon (March 18), but announced earlier in the day he had been advised not to sing.

The singer, 78, was to take to the stage with Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens as support acts. However, just six hours before he was due to perform, Sir Rod tweeted he had come down with a viral infection which was affecting his throat, making him unable to sing.

A statement shared by all three musicians on Instagram told fans there would be a further announcement, early next week, on the concert arrangements. Many fans responded to the announcement by wishing the musician a speedy recovery.

Record label Live Nation and Roundhouse Entertainment said: "Live Nation and Roundhouse Entertainment regret to announce that tonight's performance by Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens at Mt Duneed Estate, Geelong will not go ahead, due to illness.

"We apologise for the disappointment and inconvenience to ticket holders. A further announcement regarding concert arrangements will be made early next week."

In a follow-up statement, posted to Twitter and Instagram, Sir Rod explained in more detail why the show was to be cancelled. "Hello my friends," he wrote.

"I'm absolutely downhearted that I'm disappointing my fans who bought tickets to A Day On The Green. Late this morning I was advised that I have a viral infection and my throat is too irritated to sing.

"I'm only human and sometimes get sick just like you do. My greatest joy is performing for you, so I'm doing everything I can to get on the mend and back on stage."

Fans urged the 78-year-old to "stay safe", as many commented they would rather see him well than perform. One fan said: "Rod, you my friend have given us fans, public so many concerts, so many loving memories.

"Life is about being healthy & without that you cannot perform to your beloved fans, its one event! Id rather you get well so I & many others will continue to enjoy you & your performances."

Another added: "You, human??? Never!! Always listen to your body and your doctor's orders!

"If they are your real fans, they realize that stuff happens! Hoping you are feeling better very soon!"

"Wishing you a speedy recovery and sending love hugs and kisses," another said.
