Sir Rod Stewart avoids arrest and leaves traffic cop 'confused' after 60mph sports car race with bandmates in Beverly Hills

Sir Rod Stewart avoided being arrested for racing round Beverly Hills in a Porsche after being stopped by a baffled traffic cop.

The rock star was up against his former guitarist Jim Cregan who was driving another of Rod’s prized sports cars - a Lamborghini Countach.

After 'flooring it' and reaching speeds of 60mph between stop signs and traffic lights, the pair were pulled over by a Los Angeles cop on a motorbike.

But the officer didn't realise the Lamborghini had right hand steering - the wrong side for America -  and mistakenly ordered Jim's passenger Robin Le Mesurier to produce his ID and driving licence.

When the fellow guitarist understandably refused and the cop eventually realised Cregan was behind the wheel, he became so flustered he let the trio off.

Cregan told the Stars Cars Guitars podcast: "We were out in two of Rod's cars.

"I'm driving Rod's Lamborghini Countach which has the wheel on the wrong side for America, it's a regular right hand drive so I'm next to the kerb.

"Robin Le Mesurier is sat next to me and Rod is behind us in a fantastic Porsche DP twin Turbo.

"Between the stop signs in Beverly Hills we're kind of flooring it to see how fast we can go before we get to the next stop sign, so we get up to about 60mph.

"Anyway, this policeman on a bike sees us doing this and chases us. He put the lights on and we pulled over.

"He walks past Rod's car over to the Lamborghini.

"There's tiny little windows in the Lamborghini which only opened about six inches and he says to Robin, who's in the passenger seat, 'Show me your licence and registrations'.

"Robin says 'No' because he's not the driver. The police officer hadn't noticed this and he eventually realises he's been quizzing the wrong person.

"He's got really flustered. He says 'Is this your car sir?'

"I said 'No it belongs to the bloke behind in the Porsche, I'm just helping him get it home.'

"So he goes back and sees Rod sitting in the car.

"He says to him 'You're Rod Stewart' and Rod replies 'I believe I am' and the cop says 'Is that your car' and Rod replies 'Yes, we're going home.'

"The cop says 'Well you were going too fast' but he was so flustered about the whole thing he just let us go. It would have been very annoying if we'd had to go to jail."

"Robin was lucky - he looks like the lovechild of Keith Richard and Ronnie Wood. People look at him and think he's probably carrying a gun."

Cregan, a close pal of Rod's, spent more than 20 years in the rock star's band which he joined in 1976.

He became the superstar's musical director and co-wrote some of Rod's biggest hits including 'Passion' and 'Forever Young'.
