'Sir Raheem' - Rio Ferdinand starts Sterling honours campaign after England heroics

Rio Ferdinand has named Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling as England's go-to man ahead of the Euro 2020 final against Italy and backed him to be knighted if England are successful in the tournament.

Sterling has scored three goals during the tournament but also registered an assist, forced an own goal and won a crucial penalty as England have reached their first major international tournament final since 1966.

Many have got the City front-man as their player of the tournament so far and Manchester United legend Ferdinand believes that he has become the go-to man for the national team too.

The six-time Premier League winner and 81 cap England international was speaking after the 2-1 semi-final win over Denmark during a vlog he posted on his official YouTube channel Rio Ferdinand presents with FIVE, when he claimed that if England are successful then the 26-year-old City star should be knighted.

"Sir Raheem...Sir Raheem after what my man is doing!

"The way that he’s just making this team tick. Any moment that you’ve got where you want to inject a little bit of spice in this team, it’s Raheem Sterling."

Sterling had a tough season domestically last season, scoring 14 goals in 49 games and losing his place in Pep Guardiola's team more much of the second half of the season.

Despite that, City still won the Premier League title for a third time in four seasons and reached the Champions League final - which Sterling surprisingly started.

Bar some unforeseen turn of events Sterling will start once again in Gareth Southgate's team when they take on Italy in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday night at Wembley Stadium, just around the corner from where he grew up.

The big game will kick off at 8pm.
