Sir Paul McCartney temporarily stopped Glastonbury headline set as fans broke into rendition of Happy Birthday

Sir Paul McCartney put a temporary stop to his headline Glastonbury performance as the crowd broke into a spontaneous rendition of Happy Birthday.

The Beatles star, who turned the milestone age of 80 last week, stopped to address fans after his second song when they began to sing to him.

The astonished McCartney asked "for me?" as the mass crowd joined together to acknowledge his 80th birthday.

McCartney said: Oh, man it's so good to be here. We were supposed to be doing this three years ago. But here we are.

"We've got some old songs for you, we've got some new songs and we've got some in-betweeners... and I got a feeling we're going to have a great time."

The rock legend was due to perform at Glastonbury Festival in 2020 before the show was cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The former Beatle made history as the oldest solo artist to headline the festival just a week after his 80th birthday, Liverpool Echo reports.

His milestone comes after Billie Eilish became the youngest at the prestigious music festival. McCartney also surprised fans with a preview performance at an intimate venue in Frome, Somerset, on the evening of June 24.

On June 25, he opened his Glastonbury set with a rendition of The Beatles' classic Can't Buy Me Love. He later performed a mix of hits from his six-decade-long pop career, from The Beatles' Got To Get You Into My Life, to the more recent Come On To Me.
