Sir Paul McCartney has opened up about how he still feels the presence of his late Beatles bandmate and friend, George Harrison.
The 78-year-old singer has said that George's spirit now inhabits a tree at the entrance to his estate and that Sir Paul says "Hi George" to him every day.
Sir Paul said that when George passed away in 2001, at the age of 58, his spirit "entered" a giant fir that he had been gifted by George, and that gives him comfort to know he can speak to his friend anytime he wants.
Speaking about how the tree on his Sussex estate acts as a reminder of George, Sir Paul said: "George was very into horticulture, a really good gardener, so he gave me a tree as a present."
Sir Paul continued: "It’s a big fir tree and it’s by my gate.
“I get out of the car, close the gate, look up at the tree and say, ‘Hi George’. There he is, growing strongly.”
Sir Paul is currently riding high at the top of the US Billboard chart with his new album, McCartney III, which was recorded in lockdown with the Beatles star playing all the instruments.
Speaking further about his connection to George through the giant fir, Sir Paul said: "It’s lovely. He gave it to me — I just planted it."
The singer continued: “But then, as the years go by, every time I look at it I go, ‘That’s the tree George gave me’.
“George has entered that tree, for me. I hope he’s happy with that.”
Being an evergreen tree, it will act as a symbol of their everlasting friendship, that has endured since they met in the 1950s/
