Sir Paul McCartney admits he doesn't own any Beatles records from their heyday

Sir Paul McCartney has admitted he doesn’t own a Beatles record.

Asked if he had any of the famous albums, he said: “I don’t. I often think I should have kept a copy of everything we put out, but I didn’t. Too busy living it.”

Macca said he has an old wind-up gramophone with just one 78 record – Bill Haley’s version of Rip It Up.

He was speaking ahead the 50th anniversary of LP Abbey Road, on September 26, which will be marked with a series of shows on Radio 2.

Macca, 77, also looked back at the making of the famous sleeve cover of the band on the zebra crossing. He said: “People say, ‘why didn’t you have any shoes on?’

"That’s purely because it was such a nice day and I’d come in flip-flops. I did a few shots with the sandals and then I kicked them off. We didn’t realise it would become iconic.”

Reflecting on the band’s success, Sir Paul said: “It’s hard to deny there was some special spark going on. I listen to the music and just think, ‘bloody hell, it’s good’.

“It’s amazing how these four guys from Liverpool came together. We didn’t live near each other, so it was pretty magical we met up in the first place. You could say it was just good luck, but the fact we did so much... starts to seem a little bit magical.”
