'Sir Nick is a Geordie' - NUFC's takeover lawyer reveals a family link to Tyneside

The QC hired to take on the Premier League on behalf of Mike Ashley and Newcastle United over the failed Toon takeover has revealed a link to Tyneside.

Nick De Marco - who in recent months has got Toon fans excited on Twitter with his cryptic posts - told his followers that one of the city's most famous eateries was opened by cousins of his.

Mark Toney which has outlets on Percey Street and Grainger Street was founded by the Marcantonio family - cousins of the De Marcos according to the barrister.

Tweeting about the link, De Marco wrote: "A link with Newcastle and my family.

"The Marcantonio family, cousins of the De Marcos from Picinisco in Italy, settled their Italian ice cream business in Newcastle and I’m glad to find it’s still there. Another place I must visit one day - #MarkToney."

Fans loved the revelation with one supporter christening De Marco as a native of Newcastle - 'Sir Nick is a Geordie,' he wrote.

The post left many fans reminiscing about trips to Mark Toney for their famous ice creams.

De Marco has been hired by Mike Ashley to act on behalf of Newcastle United as the club start arbitration proceedings against the Premier League with questions over how the top flight handled the owners and directors' test relating to Saudi led takeover bid of the club.
