It might seem gauche to focus on Malcolm Rifkind’s style in light of the cash-for-access scandal currently monopolising your news feeds, but here we are. To be honest, he brought it on himself when he explained that living on £60k a year was “quite unrealistic”. Well, we’re agreed: £60k is insufficient is if you wish to maintain an impeccably John Le Carré-ish wardrobe such as this.
Where to begin? The Borsalino-style hat? Or the taupe acrylic glasses, which look remarkably like this season’s iconic Sir O’Malley spectacles at Oliver Peoples. Or how about the Dents-style leather gloves, the wide-legged trousers that positively scream Bottega Veneta SS15 and navy winter coat complete with Wiembeck buttons, which is quite Kingsman for Mr Porter, and definitely quite expensive.
Of course the aforementioned brands are speculative. We have no idea whether Rifkind shops at Burberry or Topman. But we do know that £60,000 won’t allow him to frequent the former.
