Sir Lindsay Hoyle gives Boris Johnson a ticking off during PMQs

Sir Lindsay Hoyle gave Boris Johnson a ticking off on Wednesday, telling him “I’m more interested in you answering the question”.

The speaker of the House of Commons told off the Prime Minister after he started talking about the “last General Election” rather than responding directly to a question asked by Sir Keir Starmer.

The Labour leader asked the PM to back Labour’s motion on education on Wednesday afternoon but Mr Johnson responded by talking about the differences between the Conservatives and Labour.

He told MPs: “At the last election Mr Speaker they even campaigned to get rid of Ofsted…”

Sir Lindsay asked MPs for a “little less” shouting and told the PM: “It is Prime Minister’s questions, it isn’t about the agenda of the last General Election…Prime Minister Ofsted was not the question and I’m not interested in what they put on the agenda. I’m more interested in you answering the question.”

Later during Prime Minister’s Questions the speaker also appeared to cut off Mr Johnson as he said: “They pontificate and prevaricate and procrastinate…”

Sir Lindsay sparked a roar of laughter from MPs when he interrupted the PM by calling up an MP – but accidentally muddled up her name with Good Life actress Felicity Kendal.

Sir Lindsay shouted: “Felicity Kendal come on…Buchan even!”
