Sir Kenny Dalglish’s family thank fans for ‘humbling' support after Liverpool hero tests positive for Covid-19

The family of Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish have thanked football fans around the world for their messages of support after the 69-year-old was diagnosed with coronavirus.

Family members released a joint statement via Liverpool on Friday announcing that despite being asymptomatic Dalglish had tested positive for the virus after going to hospital for treatment for a separate health issue.

On Saturday, Dalglish’s son, Paul, himself a former professional footballer and now the general manager of Miami FC, said the response had been “truly humbling”.

"It's not my place to comment on my old man, he can do that for himself in due course," he tweeted.

"Truly humbling messages from supporters of all teams. I'm sure we can all agree this is more important than football & that we are all united as blues to support the NHS. Stay safe everyone."

Dalglish’s daughter, the broadcaster Kelly Cates, said: “Thank you so much for all your lovely messages and I’m really sorry I can’t reply to them all.”

Dalglish is a hero at Anfield, having won a total of eight top-flight titles as player and manager, as well as three European Cups. He also won the Premier League as Blackburn Rovers boss in 1995.
