Sir Kenny Dalglish reveals reason for Luis Suarez Liverpool transfer and Virgil van Dijk claim

Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish believes Alan Hansen and Virgil van Dijk can not be separated when it comes to who is the most talented centre-back to have ever played for the club.

The Dutch defender has been colossal at the back for the Reds since joining from Southampton in January 2018.

Since Van Dijk’s arrival at Anfield, Liverpool have won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and their first League Championship for 30 years.

Many in the game view the defender, who is currently sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained in October’s Merseyside derby, as the best in the world.

But when asked in an Instagram Q&A if Van Dijk was the most talented centre-back to ever play for Liverpool, Dalglish refused to separate the Dutchman with Hansen.

“It is a close call between @VrigilvanDijk and Alan Hansen,” he said in response to the question.

“But they’re both injured at the moment. What a privilege Liverpool fans have been able to watch both.”

While the former Liverpool player and manager has explained how he came about signing Luis Suarez back in January 2011.

Dalglish was in his second spell in charge of the Anfield club, with the Reds paying the Dutch giants £22.7m for the Uruguayan.

Suarez would later leave Anfield for Barcelona in 2014, after scoring 82 goals in 133 appearances for the Reds, and Dalglish has explained how the transfer happened.

He said: “I’d seen him play for Ajax and when Damien Comolli told me that Luis was available, I asked him to go for it because he is a fantastic player!”

While the former Scotland international couldn't resist a cheeky jibe at Reds full-back and fellow Scot Andy Robertson.

The left back has been a revelation since his £8m move from Hull City three summers ago, becoming a key part of Jurgen Klopp's side.

Robertson released a book last year about Liverpool's historic Premier League campaign, called 'Now You're Gonna Believe Us', and Dalglish described it as a 'great sedative'.

“Andy is a great guy, and still very humble,” the now 70-year-old replied when asked if he was friends with Robertson.

“He is a very proud Scotland captain, which earns him brownie points! His book is also a 'great sedative'.
