Sir Kenny Dalglish joins mourners at Liverpool's stadium in emotional goodbye to Ian St John

Sir Kenny Dalglish joined a handful of official mourners at Liverpool Football Club' Anfield Stadium to say a final goodbye to his friend and former team mate Ian 'The Saint' St John.

The Scots footballer was laid to rest during a private service and his coffin made one last visit to Anfield to stop by the statue of the man who brought him to Liverpool Football Club in 1961 .

The Saint's coffin was draped in Liverpool colours of red and white and adorned with roses.

An emotional note from the club also read: "The Saint, our iconic former number 9. A great player and a great man From all of us at Liverpool Football Club. You'll Never Walk Alone."

His convoy made its way into the grounds of Anfield where it stopped at the Bill Shankly monument as Sir Kenny Dalglish and some other players wearing facemasks paid respect.

Ian or The Saint as he was known, who was also a Scotland football legend, and became a Saturday lunchtime fixture for sporting fans in the eighties and early nineties as one half of ITV's Saint and Greavsie.

Piers Morgan, Jimmy Greaves, Chris Evans, and Jim White also paid tribute to the much loved footballer after hearing the news that he had passed away aged 82 last week.

Emotional note for Ian St John (Liverpool FC)

Ian who was born in Motherwell, moved to Merseyside in 1961 to join for a record £37,500.

He battled cancer in 2014 aged 76, and had to have his prostate and bladder removed.

Sir Kenny Dalglish said of Ian who was a cornerstone of the club, winning two Division One titles and the club’s first FA Cup in the mid-60s: “I think it’s right to use the word ‘icon’. It’s because of what he did in those early days, Shanks especially, the Saint and Big Yatesey, his big mucker, it’s because of them this football club is where it is.

"We should be eternally grateful for what he did for the football club."

Following the funeral Liverpool Football club posted images of The Saint's coffin complete with his picture at the back and the wreaths that were laid at the base of Bill Shankly's statue.
