Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said he was "rather surprised" by a now-deleted tweet by the Ukrainian government that said "better call Boris".

Ukraine’s official Twitter page posted a meme based on the Netflix show Better Call Saul, with a photo of Boris Johnson's face, as the former prime minister got the backing of some MPs for a political comeback.

Sir Keir told broadcasters: "I saw that tweet. I was rather surprised by it.

"But look, as far as Ukraine is concerned, my absolute imperative is to make sure that we're all supporting Ukraine in the face of aggression from [Russian President Vladimir] Putin.

"So I was surprised by the tweet, but look, in the circumstances that they face, my absolute focus is on giving Ukraine all the support we possibly can."

Mr Johnson had enjoyed a close relationship with Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky with the former prime minister visiting the war hit country during his tenure.

When Mr Johnson left office, Mr Zelensky called him a “true friend” and admitted concerns when he heard about a change of leadership.

“When we learned that there would be a change of government, all of us were concerned,” he told the Sunday Times.

“Johnson was supporting us and a lot depends on the leader. The leader is the one who communicates. The leader is the one that mediates between a country and its people, and a leader has an impact upon society.”

He said he could only “pray” to have the same level of friendship with Mr Johnson’s successor who turned out to by the soon-to-be departed Liz Truss.

“I sincerely hope that Boris’s legacy in this fight against Russian barbarism will be preserved,” he added.

Sir Keir has doubled down on Labour’s support for Ukraine and has met with troops who were being trained in Salisbury by British forces.

At the event in August, he said: “I’ve had the opportunity to thank both Ukrainian and British troops for their service and bravery. I also reiterated the Labour Party’s unrelenting support for Ukrainian sovereignty, as the country fights back against Putin’s barbarity.”
