Starmer fights back tears as he resigns as prime minister – what we know

  • Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation as prime minister from outside 10 Downing Street , less than two years after taking office.
  • He stated his decision came after his parliamentary party questioned his suitability to lead them into the next general election, a judgment he accepted with "good grace".
  • Defending his tenure, Sir Keir pledged full support to his successor, noting they would inherit a "far stronger and fairer" Britain, and expressed a desire to spend more time with his family.
  • His resignation triggers a Labour leadership contest, with former Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham , who is expected to be sworn in as an MP, considered the frontrunner, and former health secretary Wes Streeting also anticipated to stand.
  • Sir Keir has asked Labour's National Executive Committee to establish a timetable for the leadership election, with nominations opening on 9 July and closing on 16 July, aiming for a new leader to be in place by 1 September.
