Sir Keir Starmer has shown he is right man to lead Labour by suspending Jeremy Corbyn

Boris Johnson is leading one of the worst UK governments in living memory – and that is saying something.

The performance of his ministers during the Covid crisis has been abject and his handling of Brexit talks a disaster.

Against this backdrop, the country desperately needs a competent and credible Labour Party that presents itself as an alternative government.

This was not the case when Jeremy Corbyn was in charge.

Voters believed Corbyn was a poor leader who was not a potential prime minister.

A damning watchdog report into Labour’s handling of anti-Semitism shows how out of touch the Corbyn leadership was with ordinary voters.

For a party with a proud record of anti-racism to have let down Jewish people so badly was shameful.

As Keir Starmer said, it was a “day of shame” for Labour.

Corbyn’s appalling response to the report – that the scale of the problem had been “dramatically overstated” for political reasons – rightly resulted in his suspension yesterday.

For the first time in over a decade, Labour looks like it is serious about securing the trust of voters and winning power.

And in Starmer they may have a found a leader who is prepared to make difficult decisions and is ready for office.
